REACH Will Affect Your Company

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals), came into effect in European Union Member States in June of 2007. REACH applies to thousands of chemicals (substances) that are present in electrical equipment. REACH requires manufacturers to have detailed knowledge of the substances they use or are present in their products.

The burden of compliance falls not just on large OEMs that export to the EU. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) also share the burden of compliance, even if they do not directly export to the EU. Large OEMs are asking their suppliers for detailed chemical composition data on products.

Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs), a subset of REACH, are the most hazardous and harmful substances and are highly regulated. Products containing SVHCs may not receive authorization if a safer alternative exists. The SVHC list will grow and change regularly.

A Roadmap for REACH Compliance

GreenSoft helps electronics manufacturers manage REACH compliance:

  1. Work with a clean BOM. GreenSoft’s first step is always to validate manufacturer names and part numbers. In our experience, almost every BOM contains errors.
  2. Collect full-disclosure chemical data for your components when available. Regulations from governments and companies will change constantly. The SVHC list will probably grow every 6 months. Prepare for change by collecting as much full-disclosure chemical data as possible now.
  3. Manage REACH compliance information with GreenData Manager-REACH software. Validate your data collection. Roll-up substance weight or ppm of REACH SVHC for subassemblies and products. Conduct chemical analysis at the component, subassembly, and product level. Generate product level full-discosure of chemical substances. GreenData Manager-REACH will always reflect the most recent changes in REACH SVHC.
  4. Find replacements for problem components. GreenSoft can help identify non-compliant parts and find second sources.

REACH Compliance Data

GreenSoft Data Management Services will contact your suppliers on your behalf and collect full-disclosure chemical data for components, as well as non-use SVHC statements.
